WASH Innovation Lab at NIE

IHUWASH in collaboration with the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) identified the National Institute of Engineering (NIE), a city based technical institution, to establish a WASH Innovation Lab.

Tripartite agreement between MCC, NIE and NIUA was signed and implemented on April 2018. The launch of WASH Innovation Lab and assessment workshop in July 2018 at NIE has evoked tremendous response from the public of Mysore and City Corporation.

The WASH Labs are strengthening the ecosystem that is not only limited to the focus cities but also extends to the state level. It does so by conducting action research, capacity building activities, trainings, workshops and advocacy efforts with the citizens.

WASH lab provide advisory support to MCC (Mysore City Corporation) on issues relating to urban WASH Sector and carry out evidenced based research to improve designs of WASH infrastructure and systems for performance monitoring of WASH operations. WASH lab is involved in preparation of IEC material and conducting awareness programs for citizens of Mysore, to sensitize communities about: innovative WASH technologies for HH (households) and communities. “Wash Forum” is established, which supports to Mysore city corporation and other local bodies in WASH sector.

WASH Innovation lab at NIE is currently involved in taking up projects, consultancy services, and action research in the field of WASH sector. Rain water harvesting projects for Mysore city including Mysore city palace, Administrative training institute, Mysuru silk factory and in many new establishments, residential layouts and houses are taken up. WASH lab is also supporting many industries to set up rain water harvesting systems. Decentralized wastewater system is also advocated and promoted. Design of innovative water back pack systems to provide clean water in case of disaster with membrane filter technology is under research and development

WASH infrastructure and services of Mysore city needs support of  innovative technology and innovative solutions, WASH Lab at NIE, Mysore is encouraging Innovative systems  like Rainwater filters, back pack filters , decentralized waste water treatment systems to be developed.

WASH lab at NIE has concrete plans of sustaining its existence at Mysore. It will take up Rain water harvesting projects, wastewater treatment projects on project/consultancy basis, training programs on WASH sector. WASH lab at NIE Mysore will develop a team of professionals and project engineers to address the WASH sector issues of not only Mysore but also for other cities of India. Innovative products in WASH sector to address the local problems will be developed, which will in turn fetch sustained revenue to the WASH lab. A revolving self-sustained financial mechanism will be developed in a period of 2-3 years for the sustainability of the WASH Innovation Lab.

IHUWASH: Innovation Hub for Water; Sanitation and Hygiene Solutions

IHUWASH is a collaborative initiative of the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA). It is supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and aims to improve the performance of Urban WASH programs within a collaborative framework. It works through incubation and acceleration of innovative, scalable, community and market-based solutions using technologies, programs and service-delivery models.

Under IHUWASH, sustainable national and city-level Innovation Hubs are established to work closely with national level WASH stakeholders and with the administration of Faridabad, Udaipur and Mysore cities. These Hubs focus on identifying national and city level WASH issues and address them by contextualizing, testing and scaling effective, affordable and sustainable innovations, sourced at the national and international level.

Project Impact

Through the establishment of Innovation Hubs, IHUWASH aims to foster:

  • Prompt access to innovative, sustainable and scalable solutions for technology, behaviour change & communication (BCC), finance and management.
  • Promotion of WASH businesses
  • Improved WASH and health outcomes.
  • An enabling environment for collaboration.
  • An ecosystem for developing innovative WASH solutions.

The initiative will thus contribute significantly to achieving the recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda on water, sanitation and hygiene with commitments of USAID and the Government of India in the WASH sector.

Assessment Workshop - July 2nd 2018

Global Hand washing day was celebrated on 13th October 2018 at National Institute of Engineering (NIE) Mysuru, An Awareness program for scavengers, civil workers and general public on “Importance of personal hygiene” was given .  The program was organized by: The National Institute of Engineering (NIE), Mysore City Corporation (MCC) and National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), New Delhi. And Supported by: United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The program was inaugurated in a unique way by washing the hands. 200 Pourakarmikas, of Mysore City Corporation (MCC), students from the institute, public participated. As part of Importance of hand washing and sanitation, Hygiene kits and handouts in Kannada language were distributed. Street play on “Importance of personal hygiene” in Kannada (local language of Karnataka) was enacted. Chief Guest

IHUWASH WASH LAB IN MYSURU- LAUNCH AND ASSESSMENT WORKSHOP
